In these trying economic times we are often reminded of how much we waste. We are told that supermarkets throw away thousands of pounds of out-of-date goods everyday. And, high street stores will have ‘end of season’ sales to clear stock. Okay, okay, so we can all do more for the planet in our everyday lives. How and why is this relevant to the dental practice?

More than 2,600 dental care professionals have created accounts on the General Dental Council’s site, eGDC, since its relaunch in April this year.

This brings the total number of dental professionals who are using the site, first launched last November, to more than 5,200.

The eGDC site is designed to make registration requirements easy to meet, allowing users to update contact details, pay their annual retention fee and, in the future, submit continuing professional development returns.

Jimmy Steele’s independent review into NHS dentistry is published today (Monday) and is recommending significant changes to the way it is organised.

/>It includes the recommendation that a proportion of a dentist’s income should be linked to the number of NHS patients registered with them, not just the number of treatments they provide.

/>It also wants to see dentists more accountable for providing high quality and long-lasting treatments (e.g. fillings and root canals) and for dentists to take time to advise patients on preventive care.

Republican senators are trying to strip oral health data collection and sealant provisions, and possibly an oral health awareness campaign, from a bill that would overhaul the U.S. healthcare system. But so far no senator has attacked sections of the bill that would set up pilot programs for midlevel providers and stipulate that health insurance include dental benefits for children.
