Is Mellanby's work more relevant today?

I ran across this blog post from Whole Health Source that highlights a series of studies conducted by Dr. Edward Mellanby almost 100 years ago.   Mellanby discovered (in canines first, then children) a direct correlation between vitamin D deficiency and tooth decay.   Not only could a diet rich in vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus treat the effects of tooth decay, it could actually reverse them. 

Mellanby divided 60 children with cavities into 3 diet control groups. The first group had a normal diet plus oatmeal.  Group 2 had a normal diet plus vitamin D, and Group 3 had a grain-free diet plus vitamin D.

Almost all the cavities healed in the Group 3 children, with very few occurrences of new cavities. The children who supplemented their normal diet with Vitamin D (Group 2) had similar results, albeit slightly less dramatic.   Mellanby found that the children in Group 1 had more occurances of new cavities, and the oatmeal actually prevented the healing process.  Oatmeal and processed sugars are rich in phytic acid (prevents mineral absorption) which results in the underproduction of or poorly calcified dentine.  

Similar studies were conducted by Dr. Weston Price, who elaborated on Mellanby's high calcium/low grain diet.   Price found that mineral rich whole grains, starchy vegetables, and pasteurized butter could be just as beneficial.  His hit list (i.e. bad foods) included fermented grains (e.g. cereals, crackers), nuts, and processed foods.
