Can "Good Bacterium" cure dental caries?

Dr. Jeffrey Hillman is the creator of BCS3-L1, a genetically altered strain of the Streptococcus bacteria and contender in the dental caries vaccine race.   BCS3-L1 does not produce enamel-eroding lactic acid and upon introduction to the subject's mouth, would replace the native Streptococcus.

 A four-year longitudinal study of Peruvian children confirms a cause-and-effect relationship between early malnutrition and dental caries.   Over 200 participants, aged 6-11 months, were recruited for the study and classified as:

Group 1:  Normal

Group 2:  Wasted (low weight for height)

Group 3:  Stunted (low height for age)

UK hospitals report increase in juvenile tooth decay - over 30,000 cases/year

According to a recent Times article, juvenile tooth decay is on the rise, with over 30,000 children being admitted to UK hospitals with dental caries each year.   Even more startling is the increase in tooth extraction under general anesthesia (up two thirds in less than a decade).

An interesting little read - Back in 2007, an NYU College of Dentistry research team mapped the migration of early humans by using tooth decay as a biomarker.  The team collected over 600 samples of Streptococcus mutans (on six continents over the course of two decades).
